Transgrid is leading the transition to a clean energy future with safety as a core value. As Transgrid has tripled its external workforce and is delivering a growing portfolio of major infrastructure projects, Avetta has helped to increase workforce data visibility and control, streamline operations, and take a proactive approach to compliance management.
Leading The Transition to a Clean Energy Future with Safety as a Core Value
Transgrid builds and maintains the largest electricity network in Australia, providing the backbone of the National Electricity Market while supporting the transition to a cleaner energy future.
Transgrid provides safe and reliable power to over 3 million homes and businesses. As a critical enabler of Australia’s energy transition, Transgrid plays a pivotal role in connecting new renewable energy sources to the grid and supporting the shift to a more sustainable energy future. The company oversees more than 13,000 kilometers of transmission lines and 109 substations, maintaining some of the country's most complex and vital infrastructure assets.
Safety is a core value at Transgrid, embodied in the vision: Together we – Think Safe, Work Safe, to go Home Safe. This ethos drives every decision and action across the organization.
Managing Rapid Growth with Major Infrastructure Projects
Transgrid is delivering the Federal and State Governments’ vision for a clean energy future through a growing portfolio of major infrastructure and renewable energy projects.
Prior to working with Avetta, Transgrid did not have a robust and scalable contractor management process. The organization underwent a review of its safety culture, processes, and systems, which led to collaboration with the Avetta team, adoption of the Avetta One platform (previously Pegasus), and a particular focus on leadership programs.
Since 2020, Transgrid’s external workforce has more than tripled, further underscoring the need for scalable, safety-focused systems.
Manual Processes Introduced Risk
Transgrid's previous system was bespoke and provided limited visibility of subcontractors. It was challenging to know “who” was on “what” jobs and “when”. Furthermore, relying on paper-based and manual processes was becoming time and resource-intensive, and introduced significant privacy risks.
Streamlining and Digitizing Prequalification and Onboarding Processes
Avetta enabled Transgrid to transition away from paper-based processes where administration teams were manually checking qualifications for thousands of contractors. These processes were becoming unsustainable, and would have required additional hires to manage Transgrid’s rapidly growing workforce.
With Avetta One, Transgrid was able to streamline and digitize their systems, as well as analyse their end-to-end onboarding and prequalification processes to identify compliance gaps and address them efficiently.
Avetta helped Transgrid implement a range of new initiatives to ensure there was a clear prequalification process for suppliers, including ensuring qualifications are maintained and up-to-date at all times.
“When we first engaged Avetta, we anticipated around 5,000 users on the platform. Today, we’re supporting more than 10,000. Avetta has enabled us to manage significant growth in our workforce and a supplier base that has more than doubled – without a corresponding increase in administrative effort. The platform has given us scalable, consistent safety and compliance processes that will continue to support the business as we grow.” – Leonie McCallum, Senior HSE Projects & Change Manager, Transgrid
Transgrid’s partnership with Avetta started in 2020. After the business more than doubled in size, Transgrid transitioned to Avetta’s flagship pre-qualification product in March 2025, with contractor registration opening on March 12. Following meticulous planning and collaboration with Avetta, over 75% of target contractors were actively registered by the end of April, demonstrating strong engagement and early success. In May, 84% had transitioned, and the full transition completed on 16 June, 2025.
Presentations to the Transgrid leadership team about the success have resulted in further conversations and support to explore expanding the prequalification processes.
Developing and Delivering Site Inductions in One-third of the Time
Before working with Avetta, Transgrid’s site induction processes were long, complex, and costly. Site HSE inductions were over 80 pages long, with 90% of content duplicated elsewhere. Inductions took approximately 5 days. Avetta helped to streamline these processes with updated templates and restructured content delivered through eLearning, reducing the development time to 1-2 days.
With the eLearning modules and auto-enrollment based on project roles within Avetta, site managers have replaced approximately 3 hours they previously spent delivering inductions to approximately one hour focused on risk understanding and assurance activities.
The transition from manual, paper-based tracking of induction attendance to digitally tracking via Avetta and the Onsite app, with alerts for non-compliance, has enabled Transgrid to see and act on compliance risks in real-time.
Amie White, Transgrid Construction Delivery Manager, said, “Collaborating with the Transgrid Avetta team, we’ve significantly streamlined and automated administrative processes. This has freed up valuable time for our site managers to focus on higher-impact safety activities on the ground. The digitized systems now provide leaders, such as myself, with real-time access to site information across all projects, no matter where I am.”
Leveraging Real-Time Data for Increased Visibility and Control
Before using Avetta, Transgrid’s site managers were manually tracking labor hours and had limited visibility into onsite compliance.
Avetta helped Transgrid to automate the check-in/check-out process with log-points within the Avetta platform. This enabled accurate, automated tracking of labor hours with scheduled reporting for management. Avetta also enabled workers with remote access via the Onsite app, making it easy and simple for Transgrid to monitor attendance, roles and competencies in real-time. This increased visibility of the workforce, and understanding “who” is doing “what” and “where”, has helped Transgrid adopt a proactive compliance management approach.
Collaborating with Suppliers as Delivery Partners
Transgrid recognizes that the nationwide transition to clean energy will require collaboration, and views suppliers and their subcontractors as “delivery partners”. These relationships are critical as the organization and scale of the infrastructure projects they’re delivering continues to grow.
With Avetta, Transgrid was able to build assessment tools and processes to understand the HSE and compliance maturity of its supplier networks. This visibility enabled Transgrid to clearly identify opportunities for learning and improvement, and areas where Transgrid could further collaborate with suppliers to help them become safer organizations.
McCallum said, “Avetta enables us to move beyond compliance and better understand the capability and maturity of our delivery partners. It has given us confidence that our key delivery partners acting as Principal Contractors are aligned with our health, safety and wellbeing standards and leadership programs, and it provides a strong foundation for sharing insights and lifting capability across the supply chain.”
Joel McMurtrie, General Manager Health, Safety and Wellbeing at Transgrid, said, “The volume of contractors coming into our system has at times quadrupled as a part of large-scale projects, and what we’re calling mega projects. Working with this volume of contractors with manual and paper-based processes would have been near impossible. Avetta has been at the heart of automating these processes to make everything clearer.”
Improving Data Accuracy with API Integrations
Transgrid was committed to implementing a single platform for managers, employees, contractors, compliance, and authorisation. By integrating a range of APIs and systems with Avetta, Transgrid was able to:
Improve safety and compliance visibility across the organization
Reduce manual handling
Reduce duplications and improve data accuracy
Streamline operations and eliminate the need to check multiple systems for information
Some of Transgrid’s current API integrations and benefits include:
Success Factors (SAP): Simplifying the onboarding process and training record management, and removing the need for duplicated efforts or data
Active Directory (AD): Increased data access and visibility in downstream systems with automatic updates of mobile phone numbers and photos
THEOS (Transgrid Outage Coordination System): THEOS manages outages on Transgrid’s High Voltage network. Before a worker can switch or take out an access authority (permit) during an outage, confirmation the worker is appropriately authorized and familiarized to perform the work is confirmed by operators before any work can take place. The Avetta-THEOS integration enables authorizations to be visible from the operator’s system. This saves time by removing the need to log into different systems, and acts as a one-stop-shop and an additional safety measure.
Transgrid will continue to collaborate with Avetta to develop more integrations and dashboards that could further streamline and improve safety and compliance processes.
Supporting a Transient, Self-managed Workforce
When workers input their qualifications through Avetta, that profile stays with them if they move to another project or employer. This forms a transient workforce, saving time for both the worker and supplier and enabling a smoother onboarding and prequalification experience before jobs. Rather than needing to onboard a worker multiple times for each job, they are already in the system and can take accountability for maintaining their own details.
McCallum said, “The solutions we started with were contractor pre-qualification with an HSE focus, and the really big piece was worker management – managing the competencies and compliance of our workers.”
“The main benefit for us was that our contractors were able to easily upload information into a system that we could see and verify, ensuring they had the right competencies to be on site. Before, our contractors were being asked to supply that information repeatedly across many sites. The system has removed that repetition, which has been really valuable. Another big value for our suppliers is the automatic reminders when competencies are about to expire. That’s huge for monitoring compliance.”
A Shared Vision for Continuous Improvement
Transgrid’s partnership with Avetta exemplifies strategic collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to safety and efficiency. Transgrid has built a future-ready platform that supports its growing workforce and complex infrastructure projects.
Looking ahead, Transgrid is exploring ways to further improve its health, safety and compliance approach. Key safety metrics have been integrated into Avetta One with automated data analysis replacing manual, paper-based processes, improving data accuracy, transparency, and accountability across the supply chain.
McCallum concluded, “The improvements so far are testament to the proactive safety culture embedded throughout the organization, and the way Avetta has been able to ensure that safety culture is permeated throughout every worker, contractor, supplier, process and system in the Transgrid network.”
Examples of initiatives Transgrid and Avetta are collaborating on to drive further improvements include:
Remote log-on capability for workers (without a physical access point device)
Ability for workers to log off from a site via the Workforce app
Location-based log-on functionality (not limited to site-level)
Uploading verified documents directly from the Compliance Tracker section of the Workforce by Avetta mobile app
