Overseas Worker Certification Programme: Telecommunications Fibre Optics

This programme will validate a telecommunication technician’s overseas qualification, industry experience, and current competency to carry out work in New Zealand. On successful completion of the qualification, learners will be “work ready” and be able to work safely to industry standards, taking responsibility for their work and work independently whilst ensuring the safety of others. It is recommended for anyone who has at least 2 years’ industry experience in another country and requires NZQA formal qualification upon entering the country.

Course Overview

Entry Criteria
  • Learners must have 2 years' experience as a telecommunications technician
  • Learners are required to provide a technical resume and evidence of experience as a telecommunications technician
  • Must be employed by a telecommunications service provider in NZ
Duration
  • 2 x 5 day off-job block courses

  • Total Qualification Cost $7,990 per learner (ex GST)

Course Details

Program Objectives

  • Apply safe work practices and meet industry standards when working on telecommunications networks in New Zealand , including operation of plant and equipment
  • Co-ordinate and scope telecommunication sites while managing customer expectations and relationships
  • Demonstrate installation practices and procedures for telecommunications equipment
  • Operation of plant and equipment
  • Describe and apply techniques for identifying and locating faults
  • Use and maintain hand and power tools for electrical work
  • Install, locate, test and service the fibre network to protect and restore the fibre telecommunications network
  • Apply knowledge of optical fibre theory during build, provisioning and carry out repairs to industry standards
  • Included are plant operator and high-risk activity training that meet approved codes of practice
  • Telecommunications competency requirements (WTCs) embedded
  • Ensure current best practice of application of skills
  • On completion, learner will receive a New Zealand Certificate in Telecommunication Fibre Optics L3
