Summit Materials leverages Avetta to strengthen safety culture, increasing compliance by 35%

As a leading provider of aggregates, cement and asphalt paving solutions, Summit Materials plays a critical role in building the infrastructure that connects communities across North America.

Summit Materials partnered with Avetta to centralise contractor compliance and site access tracking across 700+ contractors, boosting supply chain compliance by 35% and strengthening safety culture.

Challenges in compliance management

After going through two acquisitions, Summit Materials underwent a transformation throughout the organisation. Integrating cultures proved time-intensive, shifting the focus on contractor compliance to several other tasks that came along with the merger. Internal stakeholders recognised the potential of collaborating with the Avetta programme and understood that driving increased adoption could significantly improve safety metrics.

The Avetta experience

Using a phased approach, Summit Materials rolled out the Avetta platform to a new business unit – and onboarded their haulers – covering 12 sites and a network of 700 contractors. They are currently in the process of introducing Avetta to their 23 terminals and additional sites that came with the acquisition. In the past year, with the engagement of different business units and sites, more than 360 connections have been added, strengthening their internal safety culture in the process.

Benefits experienced

Centralised tracking of MSA contracts

With hundreds of contractors in each business unit, tracking site access agreements is now easier than ever. A manual process that was done by email is now saved on the Avetta platform, with more than 70% of their site access agreements tracked. By centralising key information, Summit Materials can save time, as they no longer need to track down documentation manually, as well as giving visibility to any user who needs to access this information via a simple login to the platform.

Improved compliance

Internal changes have strengthened the safety culture within Summit Materials, and the numbers can show the impact that internal training has had. In the past year, the team has seen a 35% increase in compliance within their supply chain. This improved compliance should lead to stronger safety metrics, helping save the company time and money. Sites are now looking into different ways to enforce consequences, with API integrations and individual-level qualification as well.

Scalability for future growth

With the ability to handle pre-qualification globally, Summit has been able to steadily increase adoption of the Avetta platform across business units and locations. Looking forward, the team is planning to scale up their Avetta product usage, eyeing Worker Management to track worker-level qualifications as the next tool they’d like to implement. Handling several aspects of supply chain risk in one centralised platform has made it easier to rapidly increase user adoption throughout the organisation.
