Keeping workers safe on site

The Australian NSW Resources Regulator Key Compliance Priorities report highlights lifting & craneage, hazard reporting and working at heights safety as well as proactive assessment priorities and investigation priorities as focus areas for July - December 2022.

The Australian NSW Resources Regulator is the state’s work health and safety regulator for mines and petroleum sites. Every six months, the Regulator releases compliance reports which provide an industry synopsis of key focus areas for improvement based on assessment results for the following six months

Key compliance priorities

From NSW Resources Regulator, Compliance Priorities July – December 2022:

“Hazard Reporting
Sector: Coal and metalliferous mines
A survey by the Mine Safety Advisory Council (MSAC) highlighted a fear of reporting hazards, reluctance by casual labour to report hazards, reprisals when hazards are reported and less than adequate hazard reporting and processing systems.”

“Lifting and Craneage
Sector: Coal, metalliferous and small mines
There has recently been an increase in craneage and lifting related incidents within NSW mining resulting in cranes overturning and unplanned movement of suspended loads. This has exposed workers to significant hazards and has prompted reviews of the controls implemented across NSW mines.”

“Working at heights safety
Sector: Small mines
Recently while conducting assessments at quarries across NSW, the Regulator has observed a concerning trend regarding the inadequate implementation of safety critical controls for working at heights. Further assessments will review and raise awareness of the working at heights critical controls that must be implemented to ensure the safety of workers.”
