Aurelia Metals needed to urgently transition away from manual, paper-based processes and disparate LMS systems. With Avetta, Aurelia improved site access compliance from 32% to 96%, decreased TRIFR by 54%, and increased blood lead level monitoring compliance from 46% to 91%.

At Aurelia, safety is paramount. Safety culture is embedded into ‘The Aurelia Way’ and supported by eight ‘Rules to Live By’, which were developed in response to individual behaviours and actions that had previously caused harm in the mining industry.

To optimise its safety culture and outcomes, Aurelia identified a critical need to strengthen its Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) systems. It was operating with two separate Learning Management Systems (LMS), neither of which integrated with its document management or records systems. This disjointed setup relied heavily on manual processes and human oversight, creating inefficiencies, increasing the risk of human error, and leading to data inconsistencies and compliance gaps. Furthermore, its blood lead level monitoring for its workforce relied heavily on manual spreadsheets, which were time-consuming and prone to errors.

In FY25, Aurelia recorded a 54% improvement in its Group Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate (TRIFR) from the previous year. Kelly Larkin, Learning and Development Superintendent at Aurelia Metals, said, “Avetta was a game-changer for us. We moved from paper-based processes to automated processes, and now our workers can manage their training, safety, and compliance from anywhere on their phone. It’s easy and has freed up their time.”

Increasing Visibility and Transparency to Minimise Downtime

By automating processes through Avetta, Aurelia has significantly enhanced transparency for all stakeholders regarding site entry requirements. It has also enabled prompt notifications to the workforce about outstanding components that could impact their ability to enter worksites, minimising downtime upon arrival. This has led to more effective governance, increased workforce compliance, and ongoing opportunities to optimise efficiency throughout the workforce.

“Before Avetta, workers had to be sitting in front of a computer to check their compliance. Now, our teams can check worker compliance from anywhere before they come through the gates. It’s making life much easier.”

– Kelly Larkin, Learning & Development Superintendent at Aurelia Metals

Rapidly Improving Safety Compliance with Digital Processes

By transitioning to online training, the business saw training completions skyrocket. In particular, Aurelia’s Mining Operations team experienced standout improvements. In the 12 months from March 2024 to April 2025, average role compliance for mandatory site access modules increased from 32% to 96%. This includes:

  • First Nations Heritage training increased from 33% to 97%
  • Anti-bullying training increased from 8% to 94%
  • Respect @ Work training increased from 15% to 100%
  • Psychosocial hazards training increased from 2% to 92%

This increase in training compliance directly contributed to a measurable boost in worker knowledge, leading to a reduction in reportable incidents and overall improvements in operational safety.

Boosting Blood Lead Level Monitoring Compliance from 46% to 91% with Automated Processes

Aurelia needed a streamlined, reliable, and scalable way to adhere to the NSW Work Health and Safety Act 2013 (the Act) and Work Health and Safety (Mines and Petroleum Sites) Regulation 2022 as the business continued to grow and evolve. Its manual and paper-based processes were unsustainable.

By transitioning to a digital solution with Avetta, Aurelia could seamlessly integrate test dates and compliance status into workers’ competencies. It enabled real-time tracking, immediate notifications and reminders regarding compliance, and the ability to generate automated reports for stakeholders, fostering a greater sense of accountability.

Larkin continued, “It’s critical we adhere to industry legislation and do our utmost to ensure the safety of our staff and community at all times. Previously, we had the data but it wasn’t usable or easily digestible for all staff across the business. Once we started tracking everything in Avetta, it became much easier for everyone to understand where our compliance gaps were and what we could be doing to make our workplaces even safer and more compliant.”

Aurelia saw a dramatic improvement in blood lead level monitoring compliance. From April 2024 to April 2025, employee compliance increased from 46% to 91%.

Planning Ahead for Continuous Improvement

Aurelia is planning to further enhance its site training compliance processes by implementing gate integration through the Avetta LMS. The goal is to increase site access compliance to 90%.

Larkin concluded, “Continuous improvement is integral to our safety culture and we’re always looking for ways to work with Avetta to further optimise our safety processes and systems. The support we get from Avetta is beyond belief. We’re excited to have them with us on this journey.”
